Artificial Grass around pools? If you have a pool in Queensland, you’ve probably already experienced the frustrations of maintaining natural grass around it. Grass clippings in the water, muddy footprints on the pool surrounds, bare patches from constant foot traffic, and lawn that struggles to survive the combination of chlorine splash, heavy use, and Queensland heat. Artificial grass solves all of these problems — and it’s become an increasingly popular choice for pool surrounds across the Sunshine Coast and broader Queensland. But is it right for every pool? Here’s what you need to know.
The Problems with Natural Grass Around Pools
Natural grass and pools are a difficult combination for several reasons:
- Chlorine and salt damage: Pool water splashing repeatedly onto natural grass over time causes scorching, discolouration, and soil damage. Salt chlorinators are particularly hard on lawn edges.
- Grass clippings in the pool: Every mow sends clippings airborne and into the water, clogging filters and requiring more frequent cleaning.
- Heavy foot traffic: The area immediately surrounding a pool gets constant use, particularly in summer. Natural grass deteriorates quickly under this kind of traffic, creating muddy, bare patches.
- Mud: Wet feet on natural grass means mud — tracked onto pool surrounds, into the pool, and into the house.
- Maintenance in the heat: The areas around pools often get intense direct sun. Keeping natural grass alive through a Queensland summer in these spots requires serious watering and attention.
Why Artificial Grass Works Well Around Pools
No grass clippings, no debris: This alone is a game-changer for pool owners. Synthetic turf produces zero clippings, significantly reducing the amount of organic matter finding its way into the water. Your filter runs cleaner and your pool stays cleaner between services.
Chlorine and salt resistant: Quality synthetic turf is manufactured to be resistant to pool chemicals. Chlorine splash and salt water will not damage, discolour, or degrade the fibres or backing on a well-made product. This is one area where synthetic turf has a significant advantage over real grass.
Excellent drainage: A properly installed synthetic lawn drains water quickly and completely — splash-out from the pool doesn’t pool on the surface. This also means the area stays cleaner and doesn’t become waterlogged or slippery in the way that saturated natural grass can.
Slip resistance: Unlike smooth concrete or pavers, synthetic turf provides a textured, grip-friendly surface even when wet. This is a meaningful safety benefit around pools, particularly for children running between the pool and the lawn.
No mud: Wet feet on synthetic turf stay clean. No muddy footprints tracked into the pool or onto pool surrounds.
Looks great year-round: Pool surrounds take a beating. Natural grass around pools often looks patchy and tired by mid-summer. Synthetic turf stays consistently green and lush regardless of traffic, heat, or how many pool parties you’ve had.
The One Thing to Watch — Heat
This is the most important consideration for Queensland pool owners specifically. Standard synthetic turf in direct sun can get hot — significantly hotter than real grass. While this is manageable for adults, it’s worth thinking carefully about for children and pets who may be walking or playing on the surface throughout the day.
The solution is to choose a product with cooling yarn technology. Our Ever Lush Cool 25mm and Kikuyu Cool 35mm both feature cooling yarn systems that reduce surface temperature up to 20% faster than standard synthetic turf. In the context of a pool surround that gets splashed regularly, the cooling effect is actually enhanced — moisture activates the cooling properties of the yarn more effectively.
A shorter pile height (25mm) is also generally preferable for pool surrounds — it drains faster, stays cooler, and provides a cleaner surface finish. Our Ever Lush Cool 25mm is the product we most commonly recommend for pool surround applications on the Sunshine Coast.
⚠️ Important note on glass pool fencing: If your pool has glass panel fencing, be aware that glass can focus and magnify sunlight onto adjacent surfaces — potentially causing synthetic turf to overheat or in extreme cases scorch. Make sure there’s adequate clearance between glass fence panels and your turf, or choose panels with a low reflectivity coating. This applies to all synthetic turf brands and is not covered under warranty.
Installation Considerations for Pool Surrounds
Drainage is critical: Pool surrounds see a lot of water — from splash-out, from rain, and from wet feet and towels. Your sub-base must be properly graded and compacted to drain efficiently. A road base or crushed granite sub-base with a slight gradient (1–2%) away from the pool is ideal. Don’t cut corners on the sub-base for a pool installation — poor drainage causes odour, mould risk, and turf movement over time.
Edge treatment: Where the turf meets the pool coping, a clean, secure edge is important — both aesthetically and structurally. Aluminium edging or adhesive to coping stone is commonly used. This keeps the turf flush against the pool edge and prevents lifting over time.
Geotextile fabric: Always use geotextile weed barrier fabric under synthetic turf in pool surrounds. Our 140gsm Australis Geo Fabric is ideal — it keeps the sub-base stable, prevents weed intrusion, and helps maintain drainage performance long-term.
Joining: Try to minimise joins in pool surrounds where possible — joins in high-traffic, high-moisture areas need to be done carefully to stay secure over time. Choosing a 4-metre wide roll significantly reduces the number of joins needed in most pool surround layouts.
Is It Right for Your Pool?
For the vast majority of Queensland homeowners, artificial grass around a pool is a very good idea — it solves real, recurring problems and creates a cleaner, safer, better-looking pool environment with much less ongoing effort than natural grass.
The main exception would be very small, shaded pool surrounds where a concrete or paver finish might be more practical — but for any pool with an open lawn area around it, synthetic turf is worth serious consideration.
